With the heart of the deer hunting season quickly approaching, many hunters are making last minute preparations to increase their chances of harvest success. Common pre-rut preparations include scouting, hanging stands, and practicing shooting, but hunters looking for an additional competitive edge use their time to study deer and deer hunting techniques.
As such, The Big Book of Whitetail: Strategies, Techniques, and Tactics (240 pages, MVP Books, $30.00 U.S.) by Gary Clancy, Michael Furtman, Shawn Perich, and Ron Spomer provides education-minded deer hunters with a ton of study material.
I’ve read many deer hunting books on the market, so when I received a review copy of The Big Book of Whitetail I was concerned the book would offer much of the same information presented in countless other texts. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the entire first section of the book (about 70 pages) focused solely on the “world of the whitetail,” instead of jumping into hunting techniques. The chapter provides useful information about deer anatomy, communication, antler growth, breeding habits, and other whitetail deer characteristics. Although we hunters believe we know just about everything there is to know about deer, The Big Book of Whitetail presented me with some facts that I was unaware of, including how to interepret deer tail positions.
In addition to the in-depth information about whitetail deer, the book’s strategies, techniques, and tactics are useful to hunters who want to learn more. Subsequent chapters address whitetail hunting equipment, hunt preparation, practical techniques, and post-hunt activites, like tracking wounded deer and field dressing.
Like other “Big Books” from MVP Books, The Big Book of Whitetail is printed in large format with various full-color photos and can be read from cover to cover or used as a topical reference.
