Whew. I had a pretty good hunting weekend, despite the crazy weather. I was unsure whether I wanted to duck hunt or deer Saturday morning. However, after considering the gale force winds and rain (plus the fact that I didn’t have a duck stamp yet), I opted to sleep in. However, although it was windy as hell, the rain stopped, and the sun came out about 9:00 AM. I could have deer hunted!
Instead, I went to the post office at 8:30 and got my duck stamp. Since the winds was still terrible, I decided to duck hunt near my deer hunting spot along the Delaware River. In the driving wind, I ended up walking up on three mallards in a puddle. I dropped a hen and drake with the first two shots, and missed another drake with my third shot. It took me a while to find the ducks, and I even ended up waist deep in water (with knee boots on). Yuck. Doesn’t matter. I got the ducks. See the photo.
After getting the ducks and changing my wet clothes, I went to the deer woods around 2 PM. No joke – as I parked the truck in the parking lot, there was a doe standing in the woods 15 yards from my truck! Since I was in a safety zone, I didn’t shoot. I went to my stand. Around 4:00, I had 25 turkeys walk directly under my stand. Man! turkey season opens Monday! I also had 2 does run past at 5:15, but that was it. Either way, it was a good weekend.
I will be in the turkey and deer woods Monday.
