With Hurricane Sandy fresh in the minds of residents throughout the United States, it is easy to see just how valuable survival tools are in everyday life. Many residents in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast are still without power as they deal with cold, wind, rain and snow. In some cases, survival skills are being tested.
As Hurricane Sandy approached the U.S. coastline, I, too prepared appropriately. Living in northern Delaware, my location was in Sandy’s projected path. Accordingly, I made sure I had several items handy: fuel for my generator, bottled water, adequate food, flashlights with batteries — and my Swedish FireKnife™.
The Swedish FireKnife, from Light My Fire, is exactly what its name implies – a knife with an integrated fire starter. No matter where I go, I have some type of knife with me, and when I go on hunting or fishing excursions, I make sure to bring some type of fire starting tool (typically matches or lighter). Rather than carrying both, I now make sure my Swedish FireKnife is in my pack.
As we know, matches are useless when wet, and lighters run out of fluid. With a knife always close at hand, it makes perfect sense to have waterproof fire starting capability stored along with it. Nestled inside the handle of the Swedish FireKnife is a Swedish FireSteel® Scout fire starter that twist-locks into place. Capable of providing approximately 3,000 strikes to light campfires, gas stoves, and barbecues, the fire starter can be used in inclement conditions and at any elevation. In other words, you can clean and filet a fish, split kindling and light a campfire with one single handy tool.
At the end of the day, however, a knife – any knife – needs to be a strong cutting tool. The Swedish FireKnife doesn’t disappoint. The Swedish FireKnife features a sturdy, 3.75-inch 12C27 Sandvik stainless steel blade, a comfortable, high-friction handle, and a color-matching polypropylene sheath with a pocket clip. It is strong enough for recreational activities and most survival situations, and it feels great in hand.
The Swedish FireKnife is available in a variety of colors including: lime green, cyan blue, orange, red and black, with an MSRP of $39.99 at www.lightmyfireusa.com.
