It’s hard to believe, but spring turkey season is quickly approaching. I have traditionally hunted turkeys in New Jersey. However, I took the Delaware turkey hunting course a few weeks ago, which means I can now hunt turkeys in Delaware, too.
Wild turkeys are on my mind because I see a flock every morning (in the same spot) on my way to work. Driving home today, I saw another flock (with a couple deer sprinkled in) feeding along 295 in New Jersey. Seeing these big game birds reminds me of the peaceful, pre-dawn mornings in the New Jersey hardwoods and fields that are shattered by the loud gobbling of toms looking for mates. Aah, I cannot wait!
By the way, here is the most ridiculous news of the week. In efforts to balance the New Jersey budget, NJ Governor John Corzine is proposing cutting the Garden State’s Department of Agriculture. This obvious political posturing, coupled with Corzine’s record of anti-hunting support, can’t bode well for any of us.
