My friend Curt Barkus, Gus, and I went on our first Delaware woodcock hunt of the season today. With each of us getting our limit of three woodcock, we can say that this was our best woodcock hunting day in years!
The ground has been frozen for the past week, but the recent rain and warmer temperatures thawed it a bit. Colder, rainy weather has been in place to our north, so I figured our Delaware public woodcock spots would be pretty good today. I was right!
Gus worked beautifully, pointing and retrieving the birds. Curt shot superbly. In fact, he dropped the first three woodcock of the day — each with a single shot! He had his limit with three shells! I shot a rabbit early in the morning, but I didn’t even get a shot at a woodcock until about 2 hours into the hunt. However, by 1:00 PM, we each had a limit of 3.
