I haven’t posted in a while. I have been busy with work, book promotion, and Christmas stuff, and to top it off, I have been fighting a cold for more than a week. However, I have still hunted!
I bowhunted for deer several times, including tonight. All I saw tonight was a half-rack, little 6-pointer. He was within range, but I never had a clear shot. I would not have shot the little buck, especially since he already lost an antler.
Over the past several weeks I have hunted pheasants, chukar, and woodcock in New Jersey and Delaware. I went to a public spot in New Jersey where pheasants are stocked. In two trips I harvested 3 birds.
I have hunted released pheasants and chukar in Delaware, as well. My vizsla gus has been superb. I would guess that he has located and pointed about 35 birds in the past 3 weeks. (Notice the photos above. In the second photo, you can actually see him pointing a chukar.) Additionally, I woodcock hunted on Christmas Eve morning. Gus locked up beautifully on one woodcock. After it flushed, I shot it, and it fluttered and crashed off in the woods. After searching, Gus and I could not locate the downed bird. However, Gus kept pointing toward the top of a tree, so my guess is the bird lodged itself in some branches after being shot.
I have a busy bird hunting day scheduled for tomorrow. I will hunt released birds at my gun club in the morning, and I will hunt pheasants at Game Creek hunting preserve in New Jersey around 1 PM. I hope Gus (and I) can hang!
