I had gotten into my stand at around 3:30 p.m., and trust me, it was no easy task getting there so early after school. Somehow my dad and I managed though, and I settled in. He sat on the ground, for his stand had no cover.
The temperature was about 34 degrees and the wind was blowing straight to the feeder, unfortunately. At first, there was no action. The only animals around were squirrels and a few birds. The squirrels got on my nerves, they ran around in the leaves making me wonder if they were deer. I tried to block out the squirrels and focus on the hunt. I was looking for movement to the right of me where the deer normally come out. I just happened to glance towards the shed and saw the tail of a doe. She ran behind the shed and out the other side.
I whistled to my dad to signal that there was a deer. I figured she would circle around and come to feed. Then, my dad whistled me back. There was a buck coming. It was a five point, and he was chasing the doe. We did everything we could to stop him. We grunted, rattled, stomped, and snorted. He stopped and started to walk towards us. He needed to come out another 10 yards and I would’ve shot him. Unfortunately, he never came.
He was already after the other doe, so he turned and started following her again. Oh well. He’ll be even bigger next year.
